Trump Purges DHS Leadership, Threatening to Make Immigration Policies Even More Draconian

"The purge of senior leadership at the Department of Homeland Security is unprecedented and a threat to our national security", declared Democrat Dianne Feinstein of California.

Nielsen had grown frustrated by what she saw as a lack of support from other departments and meddling by Trump aides on hard immigration issues, according to three people familiar with details of her resignation.

Controversial Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) on Monday spread numerous misleading claims and downright falsehoods about President Donald Trump, his administration's immigration policies, and Kirstjen Nielsen, the outgoing secretary of Homeland Security. Nielsen's name will be added to the long list of those who have shuttled in and out of cabinet posts in the last two years.

Mr. Trump and Stephen Miller, his top immigration adviser, have privately but regularly complained about Ms. Nielsen.

There's a lot more to say about the myriad problems with this administration's growing reliance on acting officers and its unwillingness to fill crucial senior government positions, even as it has a Senate controlled by the same party as the president and that has generally confirmed the president's nominees.

All three have expressed hard-line views on illegal immigration, and could have difficulty winning confirmation in the U.S. Senate, which Trump's Republicans control by a 53-47 margin. Grassley (R-Iowa) said he was "very, very concerned" regarding reports that Cissna could be next in a series of rapid-fire DHS dismissals that began late last week when the White House suddenly pulled the nomination of Ronald Vitiello, who had been tapped as director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. McAleenan is well respected by many members of Congress and the president's administration.

For her part, Nielsen made clear Monday that she won't be abandoning her consistent support of the president's policies and won't be trying to undermine him after her departure later this week.

Promising to expedite early delivery of the equipment to the Pakistani armed forces in 2007, lieutenant-general Jeffrey B. This fact was strongly denied by India which reitereated that the Indian Air Force had indeed shot down an F-16.

"Nobody ever said I was cleaning house", Trump told reporters at the White House.

She did months of diplomatic work with Central America and Mexico and brokered an arrangement in which asylum seekers were to wait in Mexico for their asylum cases to play out. President Trump announced his appointment on Twitter on the same day.

The department's acting No. 2 official, Claire Grady, could leave as soon as Tuesday afternoon, the source said. Luckily, "now that she's out, Stephen Miller can go back to making people uncomfortable all by himself", Colbert said.

"They might be fantastic educators or awesome leaders in their own right", Stier says, "but they're not set out for success. (DHS) Headquarters is full of people who just aren't really super enthusiastic about the president's broad agenda on immigration". It was later revealed that she signed off on an internal memo outlining a "zero tolerance" policy that called for the prosecution of every adult caught crossing the border that would result in children being taken from their parents.

The top-down shake-up is said to be motivated by Trump's interest in more restrictions regarding migration at the U.S. -Mexico border, and with immigration overall.

"I don't envy anybody in that position because these are policies that are White House policies, not DHS", said Kerlikowske, who promoted McAleenan to be his top deputy.
