Taliban Militants Storm Checkpoints, Kill 20 Afghan Troops

Three US service members and a contractor have been killed by an improvised explosive device close to a major base near Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, the US military has said.

Colonel David Butler, a spokesman for US forces in Afghanistan, said a auto bomb had detonated near a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation security convoy, which lead to deaths and injuries.

"My heartfelt prayers to the families of the Americans killed near Bagram".

Eight other security forces were also wounded in Monday night's attack in Shorabak district, Mohammad Yousof Younosi, a provincial council member in Kandahar, said. "The contractor, an Afghan citizen, was initially treated along with other injured civilians, later identified as a contractor and treated at Bagram Airfield".

"US service members have sacrificed their lives in Afghanistan to keep us safe and no cowardly act of terror will impede our efforts to achieve peace", he said.

The names of the casualties are being withheld for at least 24 hours pending next-of-kin notification.

Earlier in the hearing, Zhang told a federal judge that she had been in the U.S. with her family for only a short time. Chuck Schumer of NY and other Democrats wrote to FBI Director Christopher Wray on Wednesday.

Earlier three people were killed in twin explosions in the eastern city of Jalalabad.

Taliban in a statement claimed responsibility of the attack and said the "suicide attacker destroyed two tanks and killed over 10 USA military servicemen".

Four were passers-by and the fifth was a driver of a vehicle going down the road, said Abdul Raqib Kohistani, the Bagram district police chief.

The US has about 14,000 troops in Afghanistan, where they primarily advise Afghan forces battling the Taliban and the local ISIS affiliate.

Violence has been relentless in Afghanistan even though Taliban militants have held several rounds of talks with US officials about a peace settlement. But the Taliban say they will not recognize any government official attending the gathering as a representative of the Kabul government, only as an individual Afghan participant. The Taliban have refused to meet with the Afghan government, which they view as a US puppet.

The blast brings to seven the number of USA troops killed in Afghanistan so far this year, compared to 12 killed in all of 2018.
