Pelosi says Barr comments undermine his role

Barr likely curried favor with Trump when he told the Senate committee, "I think spying did occur" on the Trump campaign during the 2016 campaign.

He said he had an obligation to make sure "government power is not abused".

"I think spying did occur".

Attorney General William Barr dropped a bombshell Wednesday, telling a group of senators that he believes spying against the Trump campaign did take place in 2016.

Barr, however, cleared Trump of any wrongdoing in his four-page summary of the Mueller report without revealing any of Mueller's actual evidence for and against obstruction charges.

Barr's office is working with Mueller's team to redact it. And they got caught. Democrats said they were concerned that Barr's letter portrayed the investigation's findings in an overly favorable way for Trump.

She said, "I don't trust Barr".

Barr later clarified to Sen. He had also added, "I have no specific evidence that I can cite right now", even though he admitted, "a lot of this has already been investigated". "But the question is whether it was predicated, adequately predicated", Barr said.

"No, I'm not, and that's one of my main concerns", Coons responded.

We also know that key FBI agents involved in the investigation were fiercely opposed to Trump.

"I'm not suggesting it was not adequately predicated, but I need to explore that". "I'm interested in getting that answer".

Attorney General William Barr says he won't withhold any derogatory information about President Donald Trump contained in special counsel Robert Mueller's report.

Rather, he said, the probe began with information about a conversation that a Trump campaign foreign policy adviser - known to be George Papadopoulos - "had with an individual in London about stolen emails that the Russians had that would be harmful to Hillary Clinton".

The comments reflect how quickly attention in Washington has flipped from Trump-Russia links to whether the Russia election meddling probe itself acted inappropriately.

Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., praised the Federal Bureau of Investigation as an entity but said he thought it has become clear that a few bad individuals had made highly consequential decisions in deploying it against Trump and his camp. "Yes, I think spying did occur", Barr replied.

"You're only young once, but you can always be immature", he said.

Barr toned down his phrasing as the Senate hearing progressed.

Barr didn't suggest at that time, however, that there may have been "unauthorized surveillance".

At least some of the information that underpinned the request came from a former British intelligence officer, Christopher Steele, who also was the author of the infamous Russian Federation dossier.

Aderholt was referring to the "Steele Dossier" that had been put together as opposition research against Trump, including with funding from Democrats. That may be covered in the Mueller report.

She said again, "Let us see the report".

Page has not been charged with any crime and he has maintained all along that he did nothing wrong.

Though Barr said Justice Department officials were still reviewing the bill, he told the committee that allowing states to set pot policy would be an improvement over the status quo.

Comey rejected that assertion a year ago when he testified before Congress. "I want to say that I am reviewing this, I haven't set up a team yet", he continued.
