How the Media Misplayed the Mueller Report

Following the House Judiciary Committee approving a subpoena Wednesday for Federal Bureau of Investigation special counsel Robert Mueller's full report, committee chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) told reporters he wants to see the full report and is not willing to negotiate any middle ground.

The committee vote was 24-17 along party lines, with Democrats in favor and Trump's fellow Republicans opposed. Nadler said he is concerned about reports that documents relevant to Mueller's investigation "were sent outside the White House", meaning the committee should have access to them because they may not be covered by executive privilege.

Especially when Trump, who had previously said he had no problem releasing the report, complained on Tuesday that it was a "disgrace" that House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) was now demanding the very sort of disclosure the president had once endorsed.

Barr also said Mueller did not reach a conclusion on whether the Republican president committed obstruction of justice but also did not exonerate him.

Congressman Nadler has said he's "disturbed" by Barr's resistance to share the full report immediately, and has asked him to join the committee in seeking a judge's approval to release all grand jury information in Mueller's report.

Democrats, infuriated that the report found no collusion on the part of the 2016 Trump campaign, claimed they just wanted the same release of information that followed previous special counsel investigations. Republican strongly objected, arguing that forcing Barr to produce components of these documents like grand jury testimony was unlawful. "It's hypocrisy and it's a disgrace", Trump said Tuesday in an Oval Office meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

He added that although he accepts Robert Mueller's ruling that President Trump could not be legally implicated in corruption, but does not necessarily believe that means the president didn't commit a crime.

Barr, who issued a four-page summary on March 24, said he's aiming to release a fuller version "by mid-April".

The House Judiciary Committee is planning to authorize subpoenas to obtain the full and complete Robert Mueller report, along with all evidence gathered during the Russia-Trump investigation.

In the letter last week, Barr said he is scrubbing the report to avoid disclosing any grand jury information or classified material, in addition to portions of the report that pertain to ongoing investigations or that "would unduly infringe on the personal privacy and reputational interests of peripheral third parties".

With a majority of Democrats sitting on the House Judiciary Committee, they are likely to get their way, although the non-redacted report will only be available to lawmakers, not to the general public.

Still, 83 percent of respondents said the Mueller report should be made public in its entirety, public sentiment Democrats can use to their advantage when pressing for its release.

Nadler responded by saying Trump was wrong because his comments came after Starr's report had already been released publicly, and when Congress was debating whether to make Starr's evidence public, too.

Nadler is also authorized to issue subpoenas to five former senior aides to President Donald Trump. He released a four-page summary of Mueller's almost 400 page report that cleared the president of collusion, but left the question of wether Trump obstructed justice open.

It's possible Trump is just so committed to a wide-ranging view of executive privilege he will insist on withholding a report that humiliates his critics and disproves all the unfounded suspicions the Fake News has raised about his relations with Russian Federation.
