The states that have reported cases to the CDC are Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Texas and Washington. Unvaccinated individuals living in four ZIP codes who may have been exposed to measles will be required to receive the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine in order.

Painful rashes, diarrhea, even possibly blindness or deadly brain inflammation - these are all symptoms of measles. At the time, my medical colleagues and I hailed the end of this unsafe virus that infected more than 4 million people per year, hospitalized 50,000, and killed 500, before the measles vaccine program began in 1963.

But city health officials say they have they have struck the right balance with the unusual order, and they hope a mixture of outreach and prodding will overcome resistance to vaccines in a slice of the predominantly Orthodox Jewish community hardest hit by the disease. New York City declared a public health emergency this week and made immunization mandatory in some communities.

The order focuses on neighborhoods inhabited by large numbers of very conservative Orthodox Jews, many of whom believe vaccinations run counter to Jewish or Talmudic law, leading to low vaccination rates in some communities.

Other affected states include Washington with 36 measles cases, MI with 34 cases, California with 16 and New Jersey with 11. "And the reason the city government is empowered in a public health emergency is to save lives". Already this year, there have been almost 500 cases in 19 states in the U.S.

Sherlita Amler urged residents to check their own vaccination status and protect themselves and their unvaccinated children from measles by getting the MMR vaccine from their provider or a special county clinic.

Junior biology major Caleb Gruber said, for him, appreciating the ability to practice advanced medicine and create vaccines is an expression of faith. But for many others who haven't yet gotten their children immunized, this may prove decisive, she said.

It is too early to know if the highly contagious respiratory disease spread during recent spring break travels, and the Utah Department of Health was reporting no cases as of Thursday. The World Health Organization recently dubbed it one of the top global threats of 2019. Refusing vaccines is not a doctrine of the Jewish Orthodox, Mormon, Jehovah's Witness, or any other religious community. The disease is transmitted when people who have not been vaccinated come into contact with others, so areas around global airports or proximity to communities who shun vaccines are of particular concern. "But I don't see any side effects", she said.

"So far, we've been spared the outbreak", Anderson said. She added that a true understanding of vaccination requires more than surface-level explanations found in the media.
