The state Department of Health and Human Services issued an update Friday on the state's measles outbreak and, as part of that, listed three locations in Sturgis as possible exposure sites. It has not been confirmed if this specific case came from one of those practices. Those affected range from age eight months to 63 years.

Anyone who was there between 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. might have been exposed, the public health agency said.

South Island, Duncan, Nanaimo and Salt Spring Public Health Units are prioritizing immunizations for children. "Two doses of MMR vaccine are about 97 percent effective at preventing measles; one dose is about 93 percent effective".

If symptoms develop, residents are urged to not visit their doctor or emergency room UNLESS they have called ahead so precautions can be taken to prevent exposure to other individuals. Wikipedia tells me that in 1980, 2.6 million people died of it but, as vaccination spread around the world, by 1990 "only" 545,000 died; and by 2014, global vaccination programmes had reduced the number of deaths from measles to 73,000. In Rockland County, New York, officials announced a temporary ban on unvaccinated people gathering in enclosed public spaces, reporting that more than 80 percent of the individuals with measles had not been vaccinated.

Measles can cause serious illness requiring hospitalization.

The MMR vaccine will be available at both locations.

Measles is highly contagious and the incubation period for the illness is between seven and 21 days.

So far this year, there have been 387 cases of measles confirmed in 15 states. In addition, immune globulin (Ig) treatment is effective within six days of exposure for high-risk individuals. It is the highest number the state has seen since 1991 when 65 cases were reported.

Dallas County reported its first confirmed case of measles since 2017 on Thursday.

A rash that is red, raised, blotchy; usually starts on face, spreads to trunk, arms, and legs 3-5 days after symptoms begin. You should call before visiting a health care provider.

Measles signs and symptoms appear around 10 to 14 days after exposure to the virus. The virus can live in droplets in the air up to two hours after an infected person has coughed or sneezed.
