Vietnam: Trump, Kim arrive in Hanoi for second summit

The setting of President Trump's second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un offers a symbolic reminder of how much the two leaders can accomplish. "I think it will lead to a wonderful, really a wonderful situation long-term".

Despite its long history of hosting VIPs, the Metropole is not an ideal summit venue from a security point of view, said Le Van Cuong, who used to head the strategy institute of the Ministry of Public Security.

"There have been efforts, whether out of hostility or not, to block the path that we intend to take", he said. "But we have overcome all these and walked toward each other again and we've now reached Hanoi after 261 days" since their first meeting in Singapore.

"We hope Trump and Kim make some progress with their denuclearization and hopefully open North Korea to the outside world", said Stephen Fries, a doctor from Colorado whose long-planned family trip was disrupted by preparations for the summit.

After a few hours' rest, he departed for the North Korean embassy in Hanoi, echoing the summit in Singapore where he took in the sights on an unscheduled sortie. "At the same time, if the North is about to agree to take corresponding measures that the U.S. wants, it will ask for more than the official declaration to end the war".

Hanoi, Vietnam is the seat of a government against which the United States waged an even bloodier conflict than it ever did against Kim's grandfather in North Korea.

Trump stopped for brief conversation with the dignitaries, who included Vietnam's ambassador to the U.S., Hà Kim Ngọc; Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Phạm Bình Minh and the U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam, Daniel Kritenbrink.

Arms control expert Jeffrey Lewis said he is not merely concerned about Trump unwisely giving Kim concessions ― he is convinced it will happen.

Towards the end of his speech, Lee encouraged his fellow attendees and viewers to "mobilize" and get ready for the 2020 elections. They also won the British Academy Film and Television Arts award, also known as BAFTA, in the same category earlier this month .

"Thank you to all of the people for the great reception in Hanoi".

The White House originally had planned for the first full day of his visit to consist of late morning and afternoon meetings with Vietnamese officials and the second day to be his "summit" with Kim.

It's the first time Bolton has openly remarked on North Korea since he told the Washington Times on January 25th what the US needs from the North "is a significant sign of a strategic decision to give up nuclear weapons".

But North Korea continues to push the U.S.to ease sanctions before the Yongbyon facility is dismantled.

The Korean conflict ended in 1953 with an armistice, essentially a cease-fire signed by North Korea, China and the 17-nation, USA -led United Nations Command.

To lure Kim into radical change, Trump is believed to be considering offering a formal peace declaration - though perhaps not a formal treaty - to draw a line under the technically still unfinished war.

In March past year, Kim traveled to Beijing in his first foreign trip since becoming North Korea's supreme leader following the death of his father Kim Jong Il in late 2011.

Ahead of Kim's second summit with United States President Donald Trump, citizens in the North are showing a lot of interest in the prize and speculation that Kim will be a recipient is high.

"I was so excited when we were told to stand in place for the arrival of the train", she said.
