Video Captures Terrifying Moment of an Avalanche Whiting Out Entire Highway Stretch

Jacob Easton also captured footage of the avalanche, telling KDVR that he pulled his vehicle over and waited for the snow to stop tumbling down. He posted the video to Facebook.

A plume of snow covered the highway between Frisco and Copper Mountain.

"All of a sudden, me and my dad just saw a big white cloud to the left of us and we instantly noticed the avalanche", he told FOX31.

His windshield was covered with snow, but it wasn't enough to trap his vehicle.

While the avalanche looked bad on camera, it wasn't enough to close the highway.

A number of tornado warnings are in place across the region as the severe weather also caused havoc in Georgia, Florida and SC . He says the threat of more tornadoes will continue for several hours as the storm system races toward the Atlantic seaboard.

The avalanche, which did not reach the road, was confirmed by Summit County dispatch.

On Sunday afternoon, drivers were making their way through a Colorado mountain pass when it was suddenly engulfed by an avalanche. Sometimes, when there's a build-up of snow, the Colorado Department of Transportation will proactively shut down highways and conduct controlled avalanches in order to prevent potentially unsafe incidents like what happened on Sunday.

"Large avalanches can release naturally and run long distances", the agency said.

A rescue volunteer was driving through the Colorado Rockies to help with an "unrelated vehicle-recovery mission" when an avalanche crashed down in front of him, the Summit Daily reported.

No one was hurt, but drivers became stranded and were forced to dig themselves out of the snow, according to the station.
