Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld condemned President Donald Trump on Tuesday over his latest attacks on the late John McCain.

McCain had been one of the Republican party's most vocal critics against Trump, eventually choosing to exclude the sitting president from his eventual funeral. On Monday, the daughter of the late Arizona Senator also tore into the US President during an episode of the TV show "The View", saying that her father was Trump's "kryptonite" in life and in death.

"I'm very unhappy that he didn't repeal and replace Obamacare", Trump said of McCain, who voted in 2017 against a repeal of the Affordable Care Act. "I think that's disgraceful". "He had far worse 'stains" than this, including thumbs down on repeal and replace after years of campaigning to repeal and replace!"

McCain actually finished fifth from the bottom and went on to fly jets in Vietnam, where he was captured and spent more than six years incarcerated.

In a series of tweets sent from the president in the early morning of March 17, Trump made allegations that McCain sent a "fake dossier" to both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and media about Trump's ties to Russian Federation.

Over the past few days, Trump has been widely-criticized for the tweets, with even some of his most loyal supporters wondering why the president felt it was necessary to attack a deceased veteran.

McCain says Trump "will never be a great man", and is urging Trump to focus on his family instead of hers.

Trump targeted McCain during his presidential campaign, saying in 2015 that the former prisoner-of-war was not a hero, "because he was captured".
