Trout's $430M deal has everyone debating Kyler's decision

Trout's $430M deal has everyone debating Kyler's decision

Trout's US$430 million contract makes his the highest paid athlete in sports, surpassing the mark set by fellow Major League Baseball outfielder Bryce Harper, who signed a 13-year deal with US$330 million with the Philadelphia Phillies earlier in this month.

Trout and the Angels were closing in on a 12-year, $430 million contract extension, which will likely keep him in an Angels uniform for the remainder of his career, USA Today reported, citing a person familiar with the deal.

Mike Trout, the best player in baseball, isn't going anywhere for a long, long time.

Now 27, Trout is the best player in baseball by nearly all measures.

Queen Elizabeth II will create a new Household for Meghan and Harry
Meghan Markle has no more scheduled public appearances booked before Baby Sussex makes their arrival in late April/early May. It will coincide with the move of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor before their baby arrives.

The Angels will nullify that possibility by ripping up the final two seasons of his six-year, $144.5 million deal and replacing it with the new 12-year deal through the 2030 season, sources told ESPN. He'll be paid just short of $36 million a year, smashing the record previously held by Zack Greinke and his current $34.4 million salary from the Arizona Diamondbacks. They are more than twice as many as Harper (1.05 million), more than seven times as many as Yankees standout Aaron Judge (342,000), more than 10 times as many as vocal social media presences Alex Bregman (236,000) and Trevor Bauer (143,000) and more than 13 times as many as reigning AL MVP Mookie Betts (193,000). He has also led all of baseball in on-base percentage in three straight seasons and is a plus defender in center field.

And this would have come in an economic atmosphere in which - despite an overall downturn for veteran free agents - top-end talent continues to earn record-setting deals.

Trout is a 27-year-old centerfielder who is a seven-time All Star. He could have created a super team with Bryce Harper on the Phillies, the team for which he grew up rooting.

After Tuesday's news broke, the Harper-Trout comparisons resurfaced, and jokes about how disappointed Harper must be to be upstaged by Trout once again oozed like Cheez Whiz. Since turning down the eight-year offer, Betts has won the MVP and was central to a championship last year and just witnessed an offseason in which Manny Machado received $300 million, Bryce Harper $330 million and now Mike Trout $430 million.
