Shamima Begum's son has died in ISIS refugee camp, her lawyer claims

The lawyer for a teenager who ran away from her London home to join the Islamic State group in Syria says he has received unconfirmed reports that her newborn baby has died.

Earlier on Friday, the lawyer acting for the family of ISIS bride Shamima Begum had said there were "strong but unconfirmed" reports that her baby son had died.

The paramedic, working for the Kurdish Red Crescent in and around the camp where Ms Begum had been staying, said the baby had been suffering from breathing difficulties and a lung infection.

The 19-year-old, who left her home in Bethnal Green, east London in 2015 with two other school girls, had said she wanted to return to Britain.

Begum - who gave birth to her son last month - told Sky News he was unwell and she was struggling to get medical supplies.

Javid previously confirmed the baby was a British citizen and said he had considered the child's interest when deciding to revoke Begum's citizenship.

He said that the family had wanted to establish communications with Begum to find out what happened to her baby, adding: "This innocent baby was let down".

Mustafa Bali was quoted as saying by news agencies on Friday that Shamima Begum's infant had died at a camp in north Syria.

Begum herself has expressed regret speaking to the media, telling the Sunday Telegraph in a February 24 interview that the United Kingdom government had only stripped her of her citizenship because she had received significant media coverage, pointing out that other Daesh brides and their children had been allowed to return to the United Kingdom from Syria. Almost 100 children have died en route or shortly after arriving at al-Hawl refugee camp in northern Syria due to a lack of food, water and health care, according to the International Rescue Committee, which says the situation there has reached a "breaking point". The family has said it plans to challenge Javid's decision.

Begum and her child had been moved from the Al-Hol refugee camp at the start of this month after allegedly receiving death threats from other jihadi brides.

"I have nothing but sympathy for the children that have been dragged into this".

Akunjee told the paper: "I can confirm that it is our understanding that Shamima has been moved from Al-Hol due to safety concerns around her and her baby".

'Inside Syria, whether in a camp or maybe somewhere else, there is no British consular presence'.
