Pochettino criticises Tottenham Hotspur mentality as loss threatens top-four finish

The former Southampton coach had hinted at his frustration at his sanction before it was announced in midweek, revealing after the Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund that he was "very disappointed" with the "football people in our country".

"I think it's a fantastic season, a season that we are going to remember".

Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea are all now looking to chase Spurs down as the race for a top-four spot hots up and Pochettino admits they may have to be realistic with regard to their current status.

However, a failure to round off his run so far with a top-four finish may give the club's hierarchy a hard decision to make, especially if Pochettino can be lured from Tottenham. How else to explain what took place on a wild afternoon on the south coast as Southampton staged a remarkable comeback to clinch a victory that will be spoken about in these parts for some time and has surely injected Ralph Husenhüttl's side with the belief they can, and will, avoid relegation. Compatriot Dele Alli is also back in the fold and the duo form part of a fearsome front line - including Son Heung-min and Christian Eriksen - that is the most potent among this quartet of challengers.

Pochettino feels the result shows Spurs must accept they are not yet among the top sides in the world, with the club announcing this week that their new stadium will finally be ready to host matches next month.

Tottenham have now gone four games without a win in the Premier League following a 2-1 defeat to Southampton at St Mary's Stadium. However, Chelsea have two games in hand, at home to Brighton and Wolves, while United and Arsenal go head-to-head in their game in hand on Sunday.

This announcement follows similar retailer financial woes, including Victoria's Secret , Payless ShoeSource and Gymboree . Last month, the retailer said it would close the 94 stores and find a buyer that would keep the stores open.

"To understand that if we want more and we want to keep our position in the top four and we want to fight on the quarter-finals (of the Champions League), we need to give more in the future and increase our level". All of which will stand them in good test heading down the home straight.

"If Brighton lose their FA Cup quarter-final match on 17 March we shall play Brighton on 6/7 April (subject to Champions League scheduling) and Crystal Palace on 23/24 April".

Pochettino has always been linked with Madrid, although he signed a new long-term contract to commit his future to Premier League side Spurs a year ago.

Solskjaer has transformed United's season.

"The players are a bit sad because we probably could do better".

At the same stage last season, Spurs crashed out to Juventus after defeat in the second-leg at Wembley.
