Paul Manafort Receives His First Sentence

The eight crimes for which Manafort will be sentenced on Thursday include five convictions of tax fraud from 2010 through 2014, hiding his foreign bank accounts from federal authorities in 2012 and defrauding two banks for more than $4 million in loans intended for real estate.

Attorney Brian Ketcham (L) arrives with other members of the Manafort defense team for a sentencing hearing for his client former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort at U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Virginia, U.S., March 7, 2019.

Mueller's office took no position on how much time Manafort should serve, but noted that the sentencing guidelines called for between 19 and 24 years and said the sentence should "take into account the gravity" of Manafort's conduct and deter both him and "those who would commit a similar series of crimes".

Judge: "I was surprised I did not hear you express regret for engaging in criminal conduct", Ellis said, per CNN.

He pleaded guilty in September to two felony counts - conspiracy against the United States and conspiracy to obstruct justice - related to his illegal lobbying.

Mr Trump's campaign co-chair Rick Gates, who was a business partner of Manafort and testified against him in court, is also awaiting sentence.

In arguing for a lighter sentence, Manafort's attorneys said he has been "devastated personally, professionally and financially".

Even after his trial and guilty plea, Manafort's legal team had an unusual arrangement with Trump's legal team that gave Trump's team insight into the questions Mueller's team was pursuing.

At the outset of the hearing, Ellis addressed the larger special counsel investigation, saying Manafort was not convicted "for anything to do with Russian colluding in the presidential election".

Deschutes County Sheriff's Office posted on Facebook Wednesday that Jeremy Taylor , 36, of Sunriver, Ore., was missing. The only food he had were leftover taco sauce packets. "I really appreciate all the help ", Taylor wrote on Facebook .

Mueller's charges led to the stunning downfall of Manafort, a prominent figure in Republican Party circles for decades who also worked as a consultant to such global figures as former Angolan rebel leader Jonas Savimbi, former Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos and Yanukovych. Manafort reached that cooperation agreement with prosecutors to avoid a second criminal trial on separate charges in the nation's capital.

To rebut prosecutors, Manafort's lawyers have said that prosecutors have no evidence of Russian collusion by their client and that his interactions with Kilimnik were innocent.

Donald Trump's ex-campaign chairman Paul Manafort could be set to receive a decades-long prison sentence for tax and bank fraud.

Prosecutors also believe Manafort still poses a risk of recidivism, noting that he lied to the government and the grand jury as recently as previous year.

"Mr. Manafort's physical, mental, and emotional health, together with his age and his nearly nine-month stay in solitary confinement, weigh in favor of a sentence in this case that does not include a lengthy period of incarceration", they argued.

The verdict marked a dramatic fall for Manafort, a savvy political operative who advised US presidents as well as foreign leaders.

In court papers, defense lawyers say Manafort is suffering from gout and poor health.

"It isn't a crime to have a lot of money and be profligate in your spending", Ellis told prosecutors.
