Mourinho urges Chelsea fans to support Sarri for improved performance next season

Chelsea, who have a game in hand over their counterparts, can move to within just two points of Spurs, if they manage to secure a win in their extra game against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Alexis Sanchez started the last league game at home with struggling Southampton before he was substituted after suffering a knock under the challenge from Saints defender Jan Bednarek.

Yet barely six minutes had later Craven Cottage erupted when Calum Chambers drifted unmarked to the back post and scored from a Ryan Babel cross following a corner kick.

"With Spurs managing only one point in the last nine, they certainly can not be confident of that third spot anymore". He paid for it with the club and the team.

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri says the midfielder needs his team-mates to develop their "understanding" of the manager's preferred style.

"It is something we are trying to improve on [linking up] when we get into those areas, to try to find the right pass. Gonzalo is very clever in his movements", the Spaniard added. Dropping points against a team who are likely to be relegated would have piled the pressure back onto Sarri, so emerging triumphant was about far more than just local bragging rights. With another man I could have done it in another way, but I know him well. He was able to react very well, as we have seen today.Sarri believes Chelsea's revival this week, coupled with Tottenham's poor form, has made the top-four chase even tighter.

"I think Zidane would be a very good appointment at Chelsea".

At the culmination of the 2-0 win, one of the Blues' few truly great results of the season, the Argentine looked as elated as he had been deflated on the National Stadium sidelines three days earlier.

In an incident-packed first half, the much-maligned Jorginho restored Chelsea's lead with his first goal since the opening weekend of the season. "This League is different to Italy, you have to adjust a bit".
