Cali was then shot several times in the street and run over, before the pickup truck sped off.

He was found with multiple gunshot wounds to his body just after 9pm and was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"There were like six shots, and then there were three more", one witness, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told the Daily News.

Police were seen taking a late-model silver Cadillac Escalade SUV away from the scene on a covered, flatbed truck around noon Thursday.

NY media say it is the first killing of a family boss in the city since the Gambino family's Paul Castellano was shot dead outside a restaurant in 1985 on the orders of John Gotti.

The Gambino crime operation is one of the five historic Italian-American Mafia families in New York, Reuters has previously reported, and it makes money through violence and extortion.

While imprisoned, John Gotti never betrayed the mafia code of silence known as Omerta, which allowed the Gambino family to remain operational.

The post-Gotti chapter saw the mob's influence on the United States eastern seaboard wane - but Wednesday's hit threw NY back to its golden years of organized crime.

In 2015, Cali was named boss, replacing 68-year-old Domenico Cefalu, who was forced to step down due to old age, New York Daily News and USA Today reported. Cali served a 16-month prison sentence for the crime.

He was wearing a jacket made of ostrich hide, costing at least £10,000 (Rs 9.1 lakh) when a reporter tried to talk to him. Nirav, who once posed with Hollywood stars and celebrities, has grown a beard and a handlebar moustache.

Witnesses told local media of hearing at least six shots coming from outside, and seeing Cali's family members rushing outside and crying next to his body.

"The Gambino crime family during Castellano's reign was the largest criminal organization in the US, with law enforcement estimating it had some 250 "'made" members" and "more than 550 lower-ranking "associate' members".

That hit was ordered by Gotti, who later took over the family until being convicted of racketeering and Castellano's murder in 1992.

"We thought those days were over", Mayor Bill de Blasio said of Cali's slaying.

Cali's distraught family members rushed outside after the shooting.

Business Insider reported in 2013 that Cali had reportedly turned down an offer to head the crime family. "Very surprising, but I guess old habits die hard".

"It takes a certain type of evil to murder a friend in their own home, and then console the grieving relatives", said Federal Bureau of Investigation assistant director in charge William Sweeney.

Last October, 71-year-old Sylvester Zottola, a reputed associate of the Bonanno organisation, was shot dead at a takeaway restaurant in the Bronx, New York.
