Johnny Manziel signs with new Alliance league, will join Memphis

Manziel was suspended by the NFL in 2016 for violating the league's substance abuse policy, but never pursued playing in the league again. The Alouettes released Manziel in early 2019 when CFL announced Manziel had "contravened the agreement which made him eligible to play in the league". Due to a mechanism within the league's rules, Manziel headed straight to the waiver wire.

Manziel signed the AAF standard player agreement on Saturday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, which will officially allow teams to sign the quarterback. The Memphis Express now boast a 1-5 record, and the Salt Lake Stallions hold a 2-4 record - making them the first two teams in the league's waiver process. The former Texas A&M Heisman Trophy victor was released from his CFL contract last month, with league officials announcing he had "contravened the agreement which made him eligible to play in the league".

The quarterback's rights belonged to San Antonio of the spring league, but that team declined to sign him and Manziel then was free to join any of the other seven clubs.

The 2012 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback is the third high-profile passer on the team's roster, slotting in alongside Zach Mettenberger and Christian Hackenberg.

The 2012 Heisman Trophy victor at Texas A&M had his contract with the CFL terminated last month.

The statement from the Alliance said that Manziel "will report to Memphis tomorrow, where we all believe he'll benefit from the coaching and mentorship of Mike Singletary".

He was taken with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2014 National Football League draft by Cleveland.

The 26-year-old Manziel passed for 1,290 yards and five touchdowns in eight games last season with the CFL's Montreal Alouettes, which acquired him in a mid-season trade with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
