Jerrold Nadler says Democrats not ready for Trump impeachment effort

The chairman of the House committee in charge of impeachment has revealed the panel is requesting documents from more than 60 people from Trump's administration, family and business as part of a rapidly expanding Russian Federation investigation.

"We do want the underlying evidence", he said.

Speaking on ABC News, Nadler said his panel's more than 60 targets include the President's son Donald Trump jnr; Allen Weisselberg, the chief financial officer of the Trump Organisation; and the Justice Department.

But Nadler also told Stephanopoulos that Democrats in Congress were still organizing evidence before they would consider pressing forward with impeachment proceedings. The chairman said the threshold for impeachment is quite high, and should not be attempted unless a significant majority of the American public supports such a drastic measure.

The New York Democrat has repeatedly expressed his view in recent months that Trump either clearly obstructed justice, or attempted doing so, by seeking to curtail special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible Trump campaign collusion with Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential election.

It comes as Mr Trump attacked special counsel Robert Mueller's credibility on Saturday, disparaging former Attorney General Jeff Sessions and former FBI Director James Comey while Washington waits for Mr Mueller's report in the coming weeks. He - he's dangled pardons, he's threat - he's intimidated witnesses.

Neither the Trump Organization or the White House have responded to Nadler's comments.

Speaking Sunday on ABC's "This Week", Nadler also revealed that the committee will transmit a deluge of document requests to over 60 different individuals and entities on Monday.

He added, "What we learned from the Cohen testimony is that he directly implicated the president in various crimes, both while seeking the office of president and while in the White House". "It's very clear that the president obstructed justice".

"This investigation goes far beyond collusion", said Nadler, whose committee would take the lead in any effort to impeach the president.

"Yes, I do", Nadler said without hesitation.

"We shouldn't be impeaching for a political reason, and we shouldn't avoid impeachment for a political reason", Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat who represents California, told NBC News in January. Clinton was impeached for it on December 19, 1998 and one of the articles of impeachment against Nixon passed by the House judiciary committee in July of 1974 was for obstruction of justice. "The American people are entitled to know". "We may or may not get there".

"They're discrediting America and they dislike this president so much they won't give him an opportunity to try to denuclearize North Korea that they would have a hearing on that day", he said.
