Introducing the Most Powerful and Brilliant Captain Marvel

Introducing the Most Powerful and Brilliant Captain Marvel

The latest instance of Marvel Studios wringing out every last drop of ink they can is "Captain Marvel". Wonder Woman, helmed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot, broke through the glass ceiling and changed the landscape of women in superhero films moving forward. It is easily one of the best comic book standalone films and most intriguing origin stories. Vers is a soldier with a rebellious streak who has a hard time listening to orders. But she's best in the quieter scenes-particularly those with Lynch-the ones where her mighty superhero fists aren't radiating screaming blue streaks, the ones where she's watching and listening to the performers around her, her face registering all kinds of emotional shifts. The actor bizarrely keeps his thick Aussie accent intact beneath his rubber mask, and the character says things that aliens simply would not say, such as "Hang on now, before you go swinging those jazz hands around!" Vers sees flashes of a past life on Earth. It also helps confirm we have no reason to feel nostalgic about that particular decade. This way the audience is discovering Vers' origin alongside her.

Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. I certainly welcome this because Larson's performance on screen is so much fun to watch.

Initially, I wasn't convinced that Larson could pull off the action hero bit.

Speaking of being cool, Larson also wants to get on those trips to Italy that Magic Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson have a good time on.

"Captain Marvel" is an origin story on par with "Black Panther" and "Captain America: The First Avenger". And, yes, it's a little freakish to see Jackson aged backwards via some impressive technology. Though some of the Skrull scenes occasionally hang heavy with a Star Trek vibe - even with a mischievous Ben Mendelsohn loving every minute he's in that prosthetic make-up - Boden and Fleck vividly render a cosmic landscape that hints at the energy and possibility of galactic adventures that would chronologically come later, while setting up details that allow for a latitude of tones from silly (Guardians of the Galaxy) to deadly serious (Infinity War).

She said: "I don't know if I'm insane, because so many people have been like, 'You must feel pressure, you must feel responsibility?' And I'm like, 'I don't, is that bad?' I just don't think that it's helpful to me or helpful to this story or helpful to the work to feel that way". This is a fairly obvious nod to the Air Force pilot Goose from the 1986 movie Top Gun.

Vers has never been on this insignificant, relatively un-advanced planet in her life - or has she? Her powers range from flying, dashing through space and the ability to send blasts of the power she absorbs. Just as Robert Downey Jr. defined Tony Stark and Chris Evans defined Steve Rogers, Larson has now defined Captain Marvel, a tricky task given the character's confusing comic backstory.

But Larson isn't the first actress to speak out about wanting an all-woman Avengers film.

Naturally, writer-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's film is set in 1995 because millennials and ka-ching!

And that's where the strength of Captain Marvel lies. The makeup work is also pretty fantastic. "(It was awesome to hear "Celebrity Skin", but Courtney Love's tirade is a weird fit for our noble protagonist.) Vers" arrival attracts the attention of a young S.H.I.E.L.D. agent with two working eyes named Nick Fury (a de-aged Samuel L. Jackson), and the two team together to battle the Skrulls, who are led by the charismatic Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), causing havoc on Earth. Is there anything else that I'm missing?
