FBI joining criminal investigation into Boeing 737 MAX

"Boeing and the FAA have been found wanting in this ugly saga that began years ago but has come home to roost with two awful fatal crashes, with no survivors, in less than five months, on a new airplane type, the Boeing 737 Max 8, something that is unprecedented in modern aviation history", Sullenberger wrote.

The Indonesian investigation agency KNKT, said last week that the final report would not be issued till July or August. Reuters reports that cockpit recordings reveal the pilots desperately searched for information about how to correct the plane's dive, and according to Bloomberg News, the same Lion Air jet narrowly avoided crashing the day prior because an off-duty pilot who knew about MCAS and how to deactivate it just happened to be traveling along with the uninformed crew.

Bloomberg's report found that the pilot on the salvaged flight told the crew to cut power to the motor in the trim system that was driving the nose down - part of a checklist that all pilots are required to memorize.

At the end, the sources told Reuters, the Indian-born captain, 31, was quiet, while the Indonesian officer, 41, said "Allahu Akbar" ("God is greatest") - an Arabic phrase to express excitement, shock, praise or distress.

Additionally, the Indonesia safety committee report said the plane had had multiple failures on previous flights and hadn't been properly repaired.

Boeing's ill-fated 737 MAX and federal regulators next week will face the first public grilling by Congress over the two fatal plane crashes in recent months.

MCAS is activated when angle of attack (AOA) sensors indicate that the airframe is in a dangerously high angle and attempts to correct it by pushing the plane nose down.

When he realised the mosque was being attacked, he ran towards Tarrant, picking up a credit card machine as a makeshift weapon. He went after him, and he managed to overpower him, and that's how we were saved, " Mr Alabi said, referring to Mr Aziz.

Eric Weiss, an NTSB spokesman, said he couldn't comment on whether any individuals have declined to provide information on the Boeing 737 MAX crashes in light of the criminal investigation. The system pulled the plane's nose down more than two dozen times, the report said.

The hearing on federal oversight on commercial aviation by the Senate Commerce subcommittee on aviation and space will include the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration's acting administrator Dan Elwell, National Transportation Safety Board chairman Robert Sumwalt and Transportation Department Inspector General Calvin Scovel.

Lynne Hopper - who previously led Test & Evaluation in Boeing's Engineering, Test & Technology group - has been named vice president of Engineering, McAllister said.

The plane then hit water.

Representatives of the Justice Department, the FBI and Transportation Department declined to comment, saying they could neither confirm nor deny an investigation.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 has come under further scrutiny after an Ethiopian Airlines flight crashed on March 10, 2019 and killed all 157 people on board.

Officials inspect an engine recovered the crashed Lion Air jet in Jakarta, Indonesia past year.

A recently-filed wrongful death lawsuit alleges that that an anti-stall system new to the 737 MAX was not mentioned in Boeing's flight manual, and that it was concealed to "minimize the differences between the MAX and other versions of the 737 to boost sales".
