Black Box Shows Similarities in Lion Air, Ethiopia

Investigators into the Boeing Co 737 MAX crash in Ethiopia have found striking similarities in a vital flight angle with an airplane that came down off Indonesia, a source said, piling pressure on the world's biggest planemaker.

The Transportation Department is seeking to determine whether the FAA used appropriate design standards and engineering analyses in certifying the aircraft's anti-stall system, known as MCAS, according to the report.

One week after the deadly crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, Ethiopia's transport minister says information has been recovered from the plane's voice and data recorders.

Data from the black boxes recovered from the Ethiopian Airlines and Lion Air Boeing 737 Max crashes, which have inspired numerous countries to ground the plane, showed "clear similarities", according to a statement from Ethiopian transport minister Dagmawit Moge given to The Wall Street Journal.

The justice department investigation will focus on the Lion Air accident and the role of the plane's automatic anti-stall safety system.

Lion Air Flight 610 plunged into the sea last October, killing all 189 passengers and crew.

Ethiopians were holding funerals Sunday for friends and relatives who perished in last week's Ethiopian Airlines crash, which killed all onboard and saw the worldwide grounding of the Boeing aircraft involved.

"As per established best practices, Boeing, Ethiopian Airlines and their insurers will go through a detailed discovery process that will include independent third party assessments about the likely root cause (s) that caused this fatal crash to determine liability, applicability of coverage etc.", Swiss Re said.

LionAir, which already has a sour relationship with Boeing following its October crash, has also announced that it intends to switch its $22 billion order for 201 of the 737 MAX 8 to Airbus.

An earlier report on Sunday by the Seattle Times said analysis on the MCAS system, largely conducted by Boeing itself, was flawed.

"Boeing does not respond to or comment on questions concerning legal matters, whether internal, litigation, or governmental inquiries", Boeing spokesman Charles Bickers said in an email.

Business Insider transportation correspondent Benjamin Zhang explained that the the MCAS, the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, is being scrutinised by authorities as they continue their investigation.

Regulators across the world have banned the Boeing 737 Max from using airports or flying across their airspace due to concerns about passenger safety. The series of crashes has resulted in an global investigation, and the grounding of the Boeing 737 Max aircraft worldwide.
