Apple Adds A12 Processor to New iPad Air and Mini

Apple Adds A12 Processor to New iPad Air and Mini

The announcement marks the first new iPad mini since 2015.

2019's iPad mini looks like the old model, but behind the 7.9-inch Retina display is an Apple A12 Bionic chip, up to 256 GB of storage, and the option of Gigabit LTE. And support for Pencil is nice if you're into that sort of thing. So, any hope that Apple would make a clean transition to USB-C connectors has been scotched for now. This time, the Mini will have the same chip as the Air, along with support for the Apple Pencil stylus.

The new iPad Air's Retina display with True Tone technology is almost 20% larger has over over half a million more pixels than the model it supersedes.

The iPad mini and I have some history. The new iPad Air features a 10.5-inch 2224×1668 display, up from the 9.7-inch screen found on the last iPad Air model.

All-new iPad Air and iPad mini deliver dramatic power and capability

Apart from that, the two new iPad models are almost identical. The fact that the iPad mini 4 went more than three years without a refresh only made that pessimism feel more valid.

However, it's worth remembering the overall cost of this iPad is still a fair bit higher than the $499 / £479 / AU$779 base price if you want to kit it out with all the accessories. Apple's iPad comparison site doesn't really help, particularly when differentiating the iPad and iPad Air.

Check out the Apple website for more info and full specs. Again, you can get cellular connectivity for $130 more. The iPad mini 5 launches in two models with a 64GB option and a 256GB option.

Starting next week, they will also be available in China (Wi-Fi models only), Macau (Wi-Fi models only) and Mexico, Colombia, Greece, India, Israel, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Thailand (Wi-Fi models only) and Turkey. The device features a 7.9-inch IPS display with a resolution of 2048×1536 pixels and 326 ppi. Other regions including Colombia, Greece, India, Israel, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Thailand (Wi-Fi models only) and Turkey will be getting it later. Just like the Air, it comes with 8/7-megapixel cameras, and is available as Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi + Cellular, with either 64GB or 256GB of storage memory. It's also powered by the A12 chip, which is a lot of power for a tiny frame - it all means it's pretty much exactly a smaller version of the iPad Air. As before, the 1st generation Apple Pencil will be available for $99. Increasingly, the iPad mini had little but size in its favor, making it tougher and tougher to recommend.

Apple says ‘it’s show time’ March 25
The TV service is expected to launch globally, an ambitious move to rival services from Netflix and Amazon.com's Prime Video. Further, neither of the popular media services likely feel that they need Apple to attract or retain subscribers.
