Schiff announces expanded scope of House Intel Russia probe

The intelligence committee also voted Wednesday to send Mueller the transcripts from the panel's earlier Russian Federation investigation. Trump has called the probe a "witch-hunt" and denied any collusion.

"Our job involves making sure that the policy of the United States is being driven by the national interest, not by any financial entanglement, financial leverage or other form of compromise".

Schiff has indicated that he will re-open parts of the committee probe, which Republicans closed last March, concluding there was no evidence of conspiracy or collusion between Russian Federation and Trump's presidential campaign.

Cohen was also scheduled to speak to the House Oversight and Reform Committee this week but pulled out, citing threats from Trump and the president's attorney-spokesman, Rudy Giuliani.

Representative Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California and chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, speaks to members of the media outside the office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat from California, at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., on January 17.

Trump said that Schiff had "no basis" for his investigation, noting that he felt unfairly targeted by Democrats.

Crowds flock to celebrate Chinese Year of the Pig
Those born in "pig" years were considered kind, generous, magnanimous, warm-hearted and considerate, and were leaders, he said. This year is the Year of the Earth Pig on the Lunar calendar and is supposed to represent abundance, diligence and generosity.

"That pertains to any credible allegations of leverage by the Russians or the Saudis or anyone else", Schiff told reporters following the House Intelligence Committee's first meeting in the new Congress, according to CNN.

Schiff said the panel would release transcripts of all interviews after Roger Stone, a longtime ally of Trump, was charged with lying to Congress.

Several congressional committees have been pushing for Cohen to testify publicly or privately before he's due to turn himself in on March 6 to begin serving a three-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to nine felonies. Stone is also charged with obstructing the House probe by encouraging one of his associates, NY radio host Randy Credico, to refuse to testify before the House panel in an effort to hide Stone's false statements. "Democrats say that giving Mueller's team access to the transcripts could at the very least allow them to determine whether perjury charges are warranted against some of the former Trump campaign and administration officials who appeared before the committee, including Steve Bannon, Hope Hicks, Corey Lewandowski and the president's son and son-in-law, Donald Trump Jr. and Jared Kushner".

Last year, both Republicans and Democrats voted to release all of the transcript materials to the public, pending a review by the intelligence community.

Democrats have long questioned whether some witnesses lied to lawmakers during those interviews, and they plan to make obstruction of justice another focus of their planned probe.

It is unclear if Mueller has since requested any other transcripts, or if he has already seen any of them. Republicans who led the committee in the last Congress blocked Democrats' attempt to do so last September.
