Saudis say crown prince doesn't intend to buy Man United

The lavish welcome for visiting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Islamabad this weekend could hardly have made more clear Pakistan's dependence on foreign investments to prop up its stumbling economy and plug its depleted reserves. "So Pakistan will definitely benefit from these neighbors if there is great leadership to put Pakistan in the right position", said the Crown Prince during a joint press conference with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan.

"There are some 3,000 [Pakistani] prisoners there and we just would like you to bear in mind that they are poor people who have left their families behind", Khan had said.

Earlier, speculations were rife when the Crown Prince's trip was delayed by a day soon after the Pulwama terror attack in India.

He also lauded the Crown Prince for the development and investment files that would push the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in a rapid progress and prosperity in view of its Vision 2030. This is his first official visit to Pakistan since his elevation to the position of Crown Prince in April 2017.

Analysts noted that the high-profile Asia trip was also meant to send a message to Crown Prince Mohammed's Western allies, many of whom have turned their backs on him over Khashoggi's killing in Istanbul, that he still has plenty of Asian friends willing to do business.

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia signed a string of cooperation and investment agreements worth $20 billion as part their efforts to turn their close relationship into a more strong and long-term economic and strategic partnership.

The prince was warmly received in Pakistan, where he was given a guard of honour on his arrival. Saudi Arabia will invest in the energy sector across the country, including setting up an oil refinery in the southwest near the border with Iran. However, Islamabad has also tried to walk a fine line by maintaining warm relations with its neighbour - and Saudi Arabia's regional foe - Iran.

A delegation led by Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani called on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman in Islamabad on Monday.

The crown prince has struggled to rehabilitate his global reputation following the murder and dismemberment of Washington Post journalist and Saudi critic Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul past year.

The crown prince has called the killing a "heinous crime that can not be justified".
