McConnell promises vote on Democrats' Green New Deal

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he plans to put the Democrats' Green New Deal to a vote so "everyone can go on record and see how they feel about" the measures created to fight climate change.

Last week, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez unveiled her long-awaited "Green New Deal", a plan aimed at drastically reducing carbon emissions in the next ten years. Kamala Harris D-Calif., Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and Cory Booker, D-N.J.

President Trump made the Green New Deal a focal point of his first rally of 2019 Monday night in El Paso, mocking it as a "high school term paper that got a low mark".

"I've noted with great interest the Green New Deal", McConnell told reporters at the Capitol.

It also calls for a "just transition" for current fossil fuel workers - from coal miners to pipeline workers - through guarantees of healthcare, jobs, and job training.

Although no designer has come forward to publicize their participation in Ocasio-Cortez outfit, Glamour magazine reported that internet sleuths went looking for the most noteworthy item: a white cape worn in lieu of a suit jacket.

"This is now a voting issue across the country", Markey said last week. She has opted to frame it as one of potentially many anti-climate-change proposals. It also said the goal was "net-zero" rather than "zero" greenhouse gas emissions within 10 years because "we aren't sure that we'll be able to fully get rid of farting cows and airplanes that fast". Republican lawmakers denounced the plan as a radical proposal that would drive the economy off a cliff and lead to a huge tax increase.

"Simply put, we are proud to be a green airline", she says. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), who chairs the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.

The Kentucky Republican's maneuver is likely an effort to both get the many Democratic senators running for president on the record on the resolution, as well as to demonstrate that there are senators on both sides of the aisle opposed to the outline.

"I think the elegance, from a policy perspective, of the concept of the Green New Deal, is that it matches a sense of urgency about that problem with climate change with a sense of opportunity around what the solutions might represent", Buttigieg explained.
