El Paso Will Not Roll Our Welcome Mat for Trump

"We were significantly low on crime to begin with and always have been". He has said he is considering running in the 2020 presidential election and will make his decision by the end of the month.

In the first duelling rallies of the 2020 campaign season, Trump's "Finish the Wall" rally in El Paso went head-to-head against counterprogramming by former Representative Beto O'Rourke, a former Democratic congressman and potential Trump rival in 2020, who argued that walls cause more problems than they solve.

The demonstrators gathered at the border where an existing barrier ends as they called for a wall to continue further.

Trump was pressing his case on immigration in the Democratic bastion of El Paso county, where the population is over 80 percent Hispanic.

O'Rourke headlined a protest across the street from an arena in which Trump is promoting his long-promised border wall between the United States and Mexico. Ted Cruz in 2018 and maintains an army of small-dollar donors and a large social media following.

The border debate got most of the attention, but it's just part of a major spending measure to fund a bevy of Cabinet departments.

The El Paso Times, responding to Paxton's claim last month, noted that violent crime in El Paso peaked in 1993 and dropped 34% between that year and 2006.

In a taped interview with Oprah Winfrey in NY, O'Rourke, 46, appeared to be leaning toward a 2020 campaign for the White House but said he would make his decision after consulting his wife and three children.

His speech came shortly after O'Rourke accused the president of lying about his hometown of El Paso by saying it was a very risky place before it had a border fence.
