Vehicle plows into New Year's revelers in Tokyo

A minivan slammed into pedestrians early Tuesday on a street where people had gathered for New Year's Eve festivities in downtown Tokyo, police said.

One person, a 21-year-old man, has been detained on suspicion of attempted murder, according to police. They say he is suspected of intentionally trying to kill people by driving the vehicle through the street.

NHK footage showed the van with a smashed front and paramedics carrying the injured on stretchers into ambulances.

Another man was slightly injured after Kusakabe allegedly struck him after getting out of the auto, the police said. His condition was not immediately known.

Police said a large tank filled with kerosene was found in the auto.

Japanese media reported that Kusakabe appeared to have planned to set his auto on fire.

Investigative sources quoted Kusakabe as saying at first he had perpetrated an act of terrorism.

At 12:10 a.m., the small van began driving into pedestrians on the street, which was closed to vehicular traffic at the time because of revelers visiting the Meiji Shrine and attending New Year's gatherings.

It is not yet clear whether he was referring to a specific execution or the capital punishment system in Japan. Seven people were killed.

The attack occurred on Takeshita Street, which is a well-known shopping and tourist destination in the Harajuku area, near the Meiji Shrine.
