The Post report followed an earlier story by The New York Times that said the FBI had opened a counterintelligence investigation into Trump in 2017 after he fired then-Director James Comey.

"I never worked for Russian Federation and you know that answer better than anyone", Trump told reporters as he was leaving the White House for a trip to New Orleans.

Trump's admission in the days following that Comey's dismissal had to do with the Russian Federation investigation, which Comey was overseeing, raised suspicions in the FBI, the report said.

President Trump flatly denied Monday that he worked for Russian Federation and blasted FBI officials who launched an investigation into his ties with Moscow as "known scoundrels" and "dirty cops".

The Times reported on Friday that the FBI was so concerned with his behaviour toward Russian Federation that they started an investigation into whether Trump was actually working on behalf of the regime of Vladimir Putin or had fallen under their influence.

Former FBI general counsel James Baker spoke about the debate as officials contemplated opening an investigation of Trump - with possibilities including his innocence as well as him being directed by Moscow.

Trump was given an opportunity to respond to the report of the FBI investigation on Saturday when he gave an interview to his favorite Fox News channel. USA officials learned of Trump's actions when a White House adviser and a senior State Department official sought information from the interpreter beyond a readout shared by Tillerson.

Outside the White House on Monday, Mr Trump maintained nothing untoward happened during his discussions with Mr Putin.

Carlson said that what the Democrats are doing to Trump could be flipped on its head against a potential Democratic president like Kamala Harris of California.

"Wow, just learned in the Failing New York Times that the corrupt former leaders of the FBI, nearly all fired or forced to leave the agency for some very bad reasons, opened up an investigation on me, for no reason & with no proof, after I fired Lyin" James Comey, a total sleaze!' Trump tweeted.

Citing unnamed current and former USA officials, the Washington Post reported on Saturday that Trump had taken extraordinary measures to hide the contents of his meetings with Putin.

Coons said, "That was a concerning, even alarming report".

"I've answered this question repeatedly, indeed on your show", Pompeo began.

Speaking to host George Stephanopoulos Sunday on "This Week", Karl said that he's been told by sources close to the investigation that the report into Russian interference in the 2016 election and any possible collusion between President Trump's campaign and Moscow is "almost certain to be anti-climactic".

"I know what the president likes to do", McCarthy said on "Face the Nation". Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., to pass a stopgap funding measure to reopen shuttered federal agencies for a few weeks while border wall and security negotiations continue, "I did reject it", Trump said. "I know what was reported publicly in the media, and I sit on the Senate Judiciary Committee, so we will consider any allegations that come forward".
