Teen driver crashes auto while doing 'Bird Box' blindfold challenge

No one was seriously hurt in the crash, but the reason that the crash occurred in the first place has raised a few eyebrows.

The driver veered into oncoming traffic and struck a passenger auto.

The latest nominee for the Darwin Award comes from a teen that drove on a highway in Utah with her beanie hat pulled over her eyes.

The "Bird Box Challenge" takes its name from a recent Netflix movie in which the characters must remain blindfolded.

According to the Layton City Police Department, the unnamed 17-year-old and her 16-year-old passenger were driving down a major thoroughfare in town when the older teen decided it was the flawless time to play-act Bird Box. Inspired by the Netflix movie Bird Box (in which a blindfolded Sandra Bullock walks around trying not to see a scary monster), the Bird Box Challenge falls somewhere between a marketing meme and the knockout game.

Harrington takes Ryder Cup captaincy with some trepidation
Harrington has been encouraged by what he said was the "unanimous" support of Europe's players and former captains. Pádraig Harrington celebrates with future Ryder Cup captains Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley at the 2002 event.

"Luckily no injuries", police wrote.

Authorities are asking the city attorney to charge the teen girl with misdemeanor reckless driving, the Standard-Examiner reported. Officers said she was participating in the popular "Bird Box" social media challenge.

The popularity of the challenge even prompted Netflix to issue a warning against unsafe behavior. Shortly after the release of the movie, some people started sharing images of them doing various tasks while blindfolded with the hashtag #BirdBoxChallenge.

Lyman also warned drivers not to try the "Bird Box Challenge" for themselves: "With driving, the stakes are so high anyway that it's just inexcusable to do something as risky as this, not only to yourself but everyone else on the road".
