Second summit between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump 'may be imminent'

Mr Moon also said the North would have to seek a compromise in a second summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump, which he said could be imminent, in order to resolve the impasse. The first two summits were not reported until after Kim left China, and the third was disclosed on the second day of his visit.

"China hopes that the DPRK and the United States will meet each other halfway", he was quoted as saying.

Kim said during his China visit this week that there is no change in North Korea's stance to faithfully carry out the agreement reached with US President Donald Trump during their Singapore summit, and pursue a peaceful resolution through discussion, KCNA said.

But since North Korea's rapprochement with South Korea and the U.S., Kim and Xi have thawed their frosty relationship, as each wants to negotiate with Trump on a key topic: Kim on denuclearization and Xi on trade. But others say Moon simply made a symbolic, conciliatory gesture toward North Korea.

His approval rating hit stratospheric levels during the first set of summits previous year between himself and Kim, and later between the North Korean and U.S. leaders in Singapore.

Kim held three summits past year with Xi, his most important ally, before and after summits with Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in. North Korea's trade with China has been significantly reduced in 2018 compared to the year before.

Kim visited a pharmaceutical plant that makes traditional Chinese medicine on Wednesday and met Xi again for lunch before heading home.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told a regular news briefing Tuesday in Beijing that Kim's visit had no bearing on USA trade talks. The North Korean leader said in his New Year's address that he might take a "new path" in negotiations if Trump didn't ease trade, travel and investment restrictions.

At Tuesday's daily Foreign Ministry briefing, spokesman Lu Kang said Beijing remains supportive of efforts to end tensions over USA demands for a halt to North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.

We can safely assume that Kim Jong-un has known all along that America wouldn't be abandoning their own nuclear weapons arsenal or unilaterally pulling all of our troops out of South Korea.

State media outlets in China and North Korea, in an unusual move, announced Kim's trip in advance, as a train carrying the North Korean leader and his entourage of senior officials crossed into China.

The North Korean leader arrived in his armoured train on Tuesday, which is believed to have been his 35th birthday.

According to North Korean's official KCNA agency China supported the North's position.

"The Sino-US trade negotiations are a matter between China and the US", he said.

Recently, China may be doing more of the latter, says James Kim, pointing to ongoing rumours of "de facto loosening of sanctions implementation in China".

SEOUL-South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on Thursday Japan's political leaders should not undermine bilateral ties by "politicizing" the issue of South Koreans forced to work by Japanese companies during World War II.

While no details were released about an agenda in China, Kim has been seeking relief from sanctions, a peace declaration to formally end the 1950-1953 Korean War and more investment.

The South Korean government believes a second North Korea-U.S. summit will happen at some point in the near future.
