Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu prepares for first WTA final

The Dane tied the opening set at 4-4 when she converted her sixth break point of the game, but she was unable to consolidate it as Andreescu moved in front.

The defending champion has progressed to her second consecutive final in Auckland, after a 6-1 7-6 (6) victory over Slovakian Viktoria Kuzmova on Saturday. "And I think I've been doing that this whole week and I'm beyond grateful right now".

Defending champion Julia Goerges is bidding to become just the third back-to-back ASB Classic victor in tournament history, following Patty Fendick (1988-89) and Eleni Daniilidou (2003-04).

Goerges is seeded No. 2 and was last year's champion.

"I think it's really important to me to just stay in the present moment", she said.

"My goal was only to qualify and maybe get a couple of rounds in but now I've beaten a couple of top players", Andreescu said.

Andreescu is preparing for the final after ousting former world No. 1s Caroline Wozniacki and Venus Williams on consecutive days.

Russian Federation detains American in Moscow over alleged spying
Even before the allegations of election meddling, suspected spy incidents have been a frequent feature of U.S. -Russia relations. Earlier in December, Norwegian citizen Frode Berg was detained in Russian Federation for similar charges of espionage .

But, having saved a match point at 5-4 down with a clutch second serve, it was Goerges who prevailed in the tiebreaker, eventually securing a semifinal berth on her third match point. Goerges had two match points at 6-4 but blew both of them with some poor tennis.

Andreescu has now played seven matches to just four for Goerges to reach the final.

"In the second set I stepped away a bit from my line and I wasn't as aggressive as I wanted to be, because in the first set she was behind the baseline and I was more in the court".

Though Williams, 38, is not the player she used to be, beating her is still an incredible accomplishment for Andreescu.

"This meant a lot", Goerges said. "She played some terrific tennis, different from a lot of players on the tour and I'm sure we're going to hear a lot more of her".

"I'm not focusing on my opponent, that's what I always say".
