Canada to stage Lima Group discussions on Venezuela crisis, Freeland says

The Venezuelan opposition leader challenging Nicolas Maduro's claim to the presidency says he has spoken with U.S. President Donald Trump.

A recent poll suggests that the vast majority of Venezuelan people oppose military intervention and U.S. sanctions. "Be on alert, Venezuela!".

Several EU countries have further said that Mr Maduro has eight days to call elections and end the standoff, or else they will back Mr Guaido.

Meanwhile, National Security Adviser John Bolton warned that "all options are on the table" against Venezuela, who could face a "significant response" if any harm came to the USA diplomatic personnel, Guaido or members of the national assembly. In turn, Russia, Cuba, China, Turkey and Iran have reaffirmed its support for Maduro as the legitimately elected head of state. "We are waiting for you and the commitment you have to our constitution", Guaido said at a Sunday news conference.

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido is pressing forward with efforts to form a transitional government by naming a new slate of diplomats.

The disputed president Nicolás Maduro is still clinging on to power and has broken diplomatic ties with the USA government. Many opposition leaders have been imprisoned in the South American nation.

The U.S. State Department said on Tuesday it had certified Guaido's authority to control certain assets held by U.S. -insured banks, including government and central bank accounts.

PDVSA's US-based subsidiary Citgo will be able to continue operations, as long as its earnings are deposited into a blocked account in the United States.

The poll, conducted by Hinterlaces in early January 2019, found that "86 percent of Venezuelans would disagree with global military intervention".

Venezuela has sunk into economic and political turmoil under Maduro's socialist government, with inflation seen rising to 10 million percent this year.

China believes that Venezuela's affairs must and can only be decided by the its own people, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Friday.
