Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara was named man-of-the-series for his three centuries and 521 runs overall at an average of 74.

"It's a great feeling for all of us".

But needing a win to level the four-match series, Australia crumbled to 300 all out, compounding the misery after some soft dismissals by the top order on Saturday as they stare down the barrel of defeat.

Virat Kohli the winning captain: "Firstly, I want to say I've never been more proud of being part of a team, than this one right here".

Australia skipper Tim Paine made no bones about the fact that his boys were outplayed by the Indians in a series that ended 2-1 after the last game was drawn.

India's won a test cricket series in Australia for the first time with the rain-disrupted fourth test petering out in a draw with no play possible at the Sydney Cricket Ground today.

India clinched the series 2-1, ending a 71-year-old long wait of winning a Test series on Australian soil.

"We've had four bowlers, and it's not easy taking 20 wickets, so credit goes to all our fast bowlers and spinners. It is remarkable", he said.

But another Pujara century in Melbourne set the visitors up for a big first innings total and when Australia capitulated in reply to 151 all out, the scene was set for India to take a stranglehold on the series coming into Sydney.

"We've got a really, really good chance to shift some momentum back into our camp, not just for the upcoming one-dayers [against India], but there's the World Cup also and the Ashes", he said.

"Apart from that, playing in South Africa and England has helped me improve my technique".

"I think what we've been able to achieve is something we should be very proud of", Kohli added. "We know how hard it is to win overseas, first time it's ever been done, so well done to those guys", he said.

"I would like to play white-ball cricket but Test cricket will always be my priority".

"Have to tip our hat to India, we know how tough it is to win in India so congrats to Virat and Ravi because it's a huge achievement. So they deserve to win the series", Paine admitted.

And us? We'll know more after the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka, which for the record is the fifth versus sixth battle on current Test rankings. There have been positives and the team has talent, it was good for the batsmen to face the top bowling attack in the world. "The message to everyone in domestic cricket is to keep scoring runs". Cricket's a amusing game and it can turn very quickly. This series will give us a different identity as a team.
