Ukraine bans entry to Russian adult men - border service chief

The 48-year-old general is observing from the skies anti-aircraft defence exercises near the village of Urzuf on the coast of this small sea, after the Russians seized three Ukrainian military ships and 24 sailors nearby on Sunday. The Azov Sea is mostly extremely shallow: Russian submarines and warships of the Black Sea Fleet can not operate there effectively, while the United States and its allies have some modern well-armed warships capable of operating in the coastal littoral.

Yet, both sides could gain from this.

A Russian government-appointed ombudswoman said the three commanders of the Ukrainian vessels captured near the Russia-annexed Crimean Peninsula were being transferred to Moscow for interrogation.

President Poroshenko imposed 30 days of martial law, warning there was a threat of "full-scale war" with Russian Federation.

"Domestic opponents of the unpopular president accused him of planning to use martial law as a way to suspend an election scheduled for March 31". Russia and Ukraine traded blame after Russian border guards on Sunday opened fire on three Ukrainian navy vessels and eventually seized them and their crews. Russians made 1.5m trips to Ukraine a year ago, the country's border guard service said, according to Reuters. This cancelation will be seen in Moscow as a nasty snub, but also possibly as additional conformation of a Western-led conspiracy surrounding the Azov Sea.

Border Guard Service spokesman Andriy Demchenko said on Ukrainian television that Ukraine is closing the border crossing into Crimea for all foreigners.

Poroshenko's move follows Thursday's decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to scrap his much-anticipated meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin at the G-20 summit in Buenos Aires. Russian Federation has attempted to exert greater control over the area since annexing Crimea - including opening a bridge linking Russian Federation to the Ukrainian peninsula earlier this year.

The prospect of Nato warships heading to the Sea of Azov which is separated from the Black Sea by the Kerch Strait seems remote as it is shallow, access to it is controlled by Russian Federation, and the Kremlin would likely view any attempt by the Atlantic alliance to deploy there as a hostile act. One of the Russian warships rammed the Ukraine boat.

A Crimea court has ruled that the sailors will be detained for two months pending the outcome of an investigation. Activists said they have been taken to a jail in Moscow. She said she met with some of the seamen and they appeared to be in good shape.

There were signs tensions wouldn't be letting up any time soon.

SBU deputy chief Oleh Frolov told reporters Thursday that a Russian Su-30 fighter jet and a Ka-52 attack helicopter fired four rockets on the ships.

The Senate also accuses Moscow of "destabilizing for the entire region" and inviting further escalations.

The Ukrainian church has been part of the Russian Orthodox Church for centuries but is moving close to forming an independent church, a momentous step that would split the world's largest Eastern Orthodox denomination. The Russian Orthodox Church and Russian authorities have strongly condemned the move, warning it could trigger sectarian violence. Separately, Ukraine has implemented 30 days of martial law in parts of the country - though Poroshenko pledged that the laws would not affect citizens and would only be introduced in the event of "Russian military aggression". They have searched the home Father Pavlo, who is suspected of "inciting hatred".
