The FSB, which said the American was detained on December 28, added that a criminal case had been opened against him.

Earlier in December, Norwegian citizen Frode Berg was detained in Russian Federation for similar charges of espionage.

Even before the allegations of election meddling, suspected spy incidents have been a frequent feature of U.S. -Russia relations.

Russia's FSB state security agency says it has arrested a U.S. citizen "caught spying" in Moscow.

No other details were immediately available and the United States embassy in Moscow has so far not commented.
