Putin hails successful test of Russia's new hypersonic missile

"Russian Federation has obtained a new type of strategic weapon", he said.

In Wednesday's test, the weapon was launched from the Dombarovskiy missile base in the southern Ural Mountains.

China's People's Liberation Army Rocket Force last month tested the S-400 Triumf air defence system successfully shooting down a "simulated ballistic target" nearly 250 kilometre away and moving at the supersonic speed of 3 kilometre per second, Hong-Kong based South China Morning Post reported on Thursday, quoting Russian media reports.

"Russia is the first in the world to receive a new type of strategic weapon and this will reliably ensure the security of our state and of our people for decades to come", Putin said, according to the state-run Tass news service.

Putin named the Avangard, which is among the array of new nuclear weapons that Putin presented in March, saying they can't be intercepted.

The intercontinental, nuclear-capable hypersonic missile system will enter service in Russia's military next year, he added.

Christian McCaffrey on Taylor Heinicke: 'He's extremely talented'
Heinicke has been appeared in six games and thrown just five passes since joining the league in 2015 with the Vikings. As noted by Panthers.com , his passer rating (52.5) and completion percentage (55.2) were both season lows.

Earlier this month, Putin said at a Russian defense ministry meeting that Russia had already started the serial production of the Avangard missile systems.

Avangard, also known as "Objekt 4202", is a hypersonic boost-glide missile system that is supposed to combine a high-performance ballistic missile with an unmanned glider vehicle for significant improvements in maneuverability and sustained top speed. Mr. Putin has laid out plans to develop missiles banned under the deal if the USA abandons it.

China and Russian Federation have significantly boosted their military ties in the past decade as both countries compete with the USA for regional and global influence.

He emphasised that no other country now has hypersonic weapons.

President Vladimir Putin says Russian Federation now has a new type of strategic weapon, announcing it will deploy its first regiment of hypersonic nuclear-capable missiles next year.

It says the system can simultaneously shell 36 targets moving at speeds of up to 4,800 metres per second (16,000 feet per second) with 72 ground-to-air missiles.
