Police hunting couple who lost engagement ring in Times Square

The New York Police Department has recovered a ring from a utility grate, recovered after a man attempting to propose dropped it late Friday.

New York Police have found themselves at the centre of a real-life romantic comedy.

The man had chosen to pop the question shortly before midnight at the NY landmark.

According to the Associated Press, the couple appealed to the police for help after losing the ring, but emergency service officers were unable to locate it.

After seeing the footage officers managed to rescue the ring, clean it up and now want to find its owners.

Eventually, they found it. But by then the would-be bride and groom were long gone and had not left their names or contact information.

"She said Yes - but he was so excited that he dropped the ring in a grate", the tweet said.

Police are asking the public to help reunite the couple with the ring, posting a video of the couple trying to retrieve it.

The NYPD's official Twitter feed posted a photo of the ring.
