Pelosi agrees to term limit to seal US House speaker job

The president has asked for $US5 billion, while Schumer and Pelosi were expected to offer just $1.3b for border security in a package to extend funding for the Department of Homeland Security until 30 September. Looking on is Vice President Mike Pence in the Oval Office on December 11, 2018.

During Tuesday's televised meeting between the president and the top Democrats, CNN analyst Ana Navarro tweeted: "Oh my God".

Opponents say the wall, arguably Trump's main campaign promise in his 2016 election, is not only a waste of money but has been used by the president to whip up xenophobia.

Trump said earlier Tuesday that he could order the military to do the work if Congress refused to fund construction - although it was not clear that he had the authority.

"Let's hope that there won't be a shutdown of the government", Pelosi said.

While there are other Democrats who are still likely to oppose Pelosi on the House floor, it's widely believed she has the numbers now, thanks to the deal, to get to the 218 votes she needs on January 3. That trio, Pelosi, 78, Rep. Steny H. Hoyer of Maryland, 79, and Rep. James Clyburn of SC, 79, must now prepare to cede power to a new generation, even as they move to take the House majority next month. While Trump's fellow Republicans control both the House and the Senate until next month, Democratic support is needed to pass any spending legislation.

Pelosi also received applause after Trump said in the meeting that it might be hard for her to negotiate and she responded by noting House Democratic victories last month. Mr Schumer shot back sternly: "It's called funding the government".

The agreement is a win for the holdout rebels, who insisted that Pelosi install some kind of transition plan in exchange for their votes.

On Tuesday, Pelosi joined Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer for a combative, 17-minute stand-off with Trump as the cameras rolled.

When Pelosi brought up Republican election losses in the House, Trump quickly retorted that his party won the Senate.

"I think it's a little more challenging than you might think", Pelosi told reporters at a press briefing Thursday.

'Frankly, the most important thing we can do is turn off the flow from those three countries, ' he said.

"It's done", Schumer said.

Trump and Republicans are demanding $5 billion for the border, while Democrats say they can not agree to give more than $1.3 billion.

Mr Schumer and other Democrats supported a 2006 law that authorised hundreds of miles of fencing along the southern border, McConnell said, urging Democrats to again back physical barriers - by whatever name - along the border. What we saw was the beginning of a new political reality for Donald Trump.
