Google announces $US1b expansion in New York City

Hudson Square will be the primary location for Google's New York-based Global Business Organization.

Google isn't the only tech firm expanding their reach in NY, e-commerce giant Amazon also recently announced plans to add 25,000 employees to a Long Island City facility in Queens.

Google will invest more than $1 billion to expand its New York City presence, the search giant said in a blog post Monday.

Today, Google revealed its official plans for the expansion of its New York City campus, via Politico. Last month, Amazon announced that it will establish dual East Coast headquarters located in Long Island City, in the NYC borough of Queens, and the in Arlington, Va. Amazon said it would hire some 25,000 workers in each location.

The Manhattan campus will comprise two buildings on Hudson Street and a third on Washington Street.

Piece by piece, Google is slowly assembling a "campus" by Hudson Square; even before the lease and purchase plans it just announced, it had already moved to buy the nearby Chelsea Market building and lease new space at Pier 57. Many high-tech workers are choosing to live elsewhere, forcing major tech companies to look in new places for the employees they need. In total, this will offer Google an additional 1.7 million square feet of space to house employees.
