First transgender contestant competes in Miss Universe

Catriona Gray, Miss Philippines, ultimately took home the night's top prize and while Ponce didn't make the top 20 in Sunday night's competition, her participation in the pageant represents a huge win for the visibility of transgender people on an global scale, something that the contestant addressed in an Instagram post prior to the contest. Instead, Ponce informed the Associated Press that advancing transgender rights is exactly what he will do. "I'm going really fast".

Ponce, the first transgender woman to compete in Miss Universe, was emotional in the video highlight that was shown during the finale. "My goal is to be a spokesperson for a message of inclusion, respect and diversity not only for the LGBTQ+ community, but also for the entire world".

The 27-year-old beat out 22 others for the title of Miss Spain. Back home, her beauty queen squad has shown their support to Tamaryn, with many former Miss SA's taking to Instagram to share how proud they were of her.
