Donald Trump Claims Hush Payments During 2016 Campaign Were Legal

Leading Democrats have said impeachment or prison time are real possibilities for Donald Trump if it is proved that he directed illegal hush money payments to women, adding to the legal pressure on the US President over the Russian Federation investigation and other scandals.

His Democratic counterpart on the intelligence committee, Representative Adam Schiff, said Trump could be indicted and could "face the real prospect of jail time". He tweeted Monday that if there was wrongdoing, it's lawyer Michael Cohen's "liability" and not his. Trump could face impeachment if the payments are proven to be felony campaign finance violations.

In marked contrast, though, when it was discovered that Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign was guilty of violations involving almost $2 million - an amount that dwarfs the $280,000 in Cohen's case - the Obama Justice Department decided not to prosecute.

Trump is suspected of instructing six-figure payments to an adult film star and a former playboy model during the campaign to keep quiet about affairs.

But when Cohen pleaded guilty in August to campaign finance violations connected to the payments as well as other charges, he stated in court that he had been directed by Trump.

"We have been discussing the issue of pardons the President may offer to people or dangle in front of people".

U.S. President Donald Trump crosses the field after the first half of an NCAA college football game between the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy on December 8.

"In his allocution, he (Cohen) implicated Trump directly".

In Robeson County, almost two-thirds of the ballots were not returned, while Bladen had 40 percent that were not sent back. The board, appointed by the governor, is made up of four Democrats, four Republicans and one non-partisan member.

Prosecutors say Cohen didn't follow up and that the meeting never occurred.

"With respect to both payments, Cohen acted with the intent to influence the 2016 presidential election", Friday's filing from prosecutors in NY says. This last detail-that it was done for the goal of influencing the election-is what makes this a campaign contribution and not a garden-variety services contract.

Murphy is backing legislation that would make it harder for Trump to fire Mueller, who has led the Russian Federation probe since May, 2017.

At least one of the president's defenders says that's not the case.

'You are beyond the stage that led to impeachment proceedings against President Clinton, whether or not you think that was worthy of impeachment or not, ' he said Sunday on ABC's 'This Week'. "And they can not make an allegation like that unless they're going to do something with it".

Since his guilty plea, Trump has attacked Cohen as a liar who is telling "stories" to get a reduced prison sentence.

He touted his administration's accomplishments, claiming his administration has "accomplished more than any other United States administration" in its first two years.

Bernstein clarified, "it's clear that Mueller is now connecting the dots between a massive obstruction meant to hide the truth about the Trump campaign, Trump, his business organization, and his family from investigators". House Democrats have promised an array of investigations into Trump's activities.
