7 upcoming flagship phones we expect to feature the Snapdragon 855

It's been clear for a while now that 2019 will be the year of 5G, and it's little surprise at this point that the Snapdragon 855 will support "multi-gigabit" data speeds on 5G networks as they light up around the country.

Qualcomm believes that the synergy of CPU, GPU and DSP brings the best AI performance for the 4th generation AI engine in the Snapdragon 855 SoC. It's still relatively early days for software and services fueled by machine learning, but the shift in the industry seems nearly palpable at this point. The Snapdragon 855 also features the world's first Computer Vision Image Signal Processor (CV-ISP) to deliver new photo and video capture features.

Qualcomm's 3D Sonic Sensor will start showing up in phones, an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor that promises fast and accurate unlocking (superior to optical sensors). It's also more secure since it's not using a simple 2D image.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips now power over a billion phones ranging from entry-level devices to flagship models, which is undoubtedly what the Snapdragon 855 is destined for in the first quarter of 2019.

Qualcomm is expected to reveal more details about the Snapdragon 855 and its features over the next few days from the summit.

The matchup prompted Thompson to suggest the night was a potential preview of June's National Basketball Association finals. A night billed as a potential National Basketball Association finals preview certainly lived up to its billing Thursday.

AT&T and Verizon both have 5G networks set up in the hotel where the Qualcomm event is taking place, and using a reference device shown off on stage during the keynote, those in attendance will get to experience a 5G connection on a reference smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 855 platform. This will allow for blazing speeds, but it will take time for networks to come online.

"5G is going to be about more than just a network". Unfortunately, this silicon will be running in smartphones sold outside of the U.S. Nevertheless, Qualcomm has stated that the 3D Sonic Sensor will appear on new devices within the first half of 2019. Given which phones debuted with Qualcomm's top-of-the-line chipset in recent years, it's not a big leap of logic to assume 2019 flagship devices from Samsung, LG, HTC and Google would at least have the option of adopting that feature.

"This is the future of fingerprint technology", Katouzian said. Snapdragon Elite Gaming, which includes Qualcomm working with top gaming companies to tune the Snapdragon mobile gaming experience.

Earlier this year, Qualcomm announced the world's first 5G modem, the X50, which is supposed to increase download speeds by up to 20x over what most mobile users now experience. Qualcomm officially announced the new processor at its conference in Hawaii on Tuesday.
