Dozens of rebels killed in Hodeida

The internationally recognized government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi said it was ready to return to the negotiating table after United Nations -led consultations collapsed in September when the Houthi delegation failed to show up.

But Pompeo suggested that the Houthis had to make the first move, specifically by ending missile and drone strikes on targets in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Geert Cappelaere said in an interview that recent USA calls for a cease-fire are imperative to ending the almost four-year war, which pits a Saudi-led coalition against Iran-aligned rebels known as Houthis. Riyadh had declared at the start of the invasion that the war would take no more than a couple of weeks. In September, the Saudi-led coalition admitted that mistakes were made in an August airstrike that killed 40 children, an event considered an apparent war crime by the United Nations human rights body.

According to a new report by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), a nonprofit conflict-research organization, the Saudi-led war has so far claimed the lives of around 56,000 Yemenis.

He said during a telephone call with Yemeni military commander Abdulkarim al-Sadey that the Houthis will be defeated in the Maran region, adding that victory was near.

Earlier this week, Defense Secretary James Mattis called for an immediate ceasefire in Yemen.

The U.S. call comes almost a month after the slaying of Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi in a Saudi Consulate in Turkey causing worldwide outrage against the Saudis.

He briefed Hadi on the battle developments during the second day of the operation to recapture Hodeidah city and its strategic port. "The time to act is now".

The united Nations Fund for children (Unicef) urged on Sunday the conflicting parties in Yemen to stop fighting, believing that the country had become a "hell on earth" for children, hit by starvation.

"Today, 1.8 million children under the age of five are facing acute malnutrition, and 400,000 are affected by severe acute malnutrition", Cappelaere said late in October 31.

The kingdom's ties with the West have been strained by the furore over the killing of a prominent Saudi journalist at Riyadh's consulate in Istanbul on October 2, and its conduct in the Yemen war, in which hundreds of civilians have been killed in airstrikes, has also come under closer scrutiny. He said the situation is deteriorating, with millions unable to meet their basic needs. An estimated 10,000 people have been killed and more than 8 million are at risk of starvation from a looming famine, including 2 million mothers who are risking death.
