DeSantis defeats Gillum in Florida governor race

Florida Governor-elect Ron DeSantis, right, answers questions from reporters, with his wife Casey, after being declared the victor of the Florida gubernatorial race at an election party in Orlando, Fla., Nov. 6, 2018.

Ron DeSantis will be the next Florida governor, extending Republican control of the state's highest office to a sixth straight four-year term and proving that a candidacy nearly entirely about President Donald Trump can win the top office in a major state.

The governor-elect said he will "fight the good fight" and hopes to work with people on both sides of the aisle no matter who they supported. The seat had been held by GOP Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who is retiring, for 29 years. "On Election Day it's the voice of the people that rule".

Florida is the most populous of the battleground states that swing between the parties in presidential elections, but Republicans have controlled the governor's mansion for two decades. Bill Nelson, who also appears to have fallen short to his Republican challenger, Gov. Rick Scott.

Trump has dubbed the Republican results in the House and Senate a "success". If he wins the general election, he'd be the first Black Governor in the state's history. Her rival, Republican Brian Kemp, won 50.4 percent of the vote to Abrams' 48.7 percent. We could not be more thankful for the support that was shown by each and every one of you. Gillum called himself "the most unapologetically progressive" candidate in the five-candidate Democratic field and staked out some positions beyond the reach of state government, such as his call for Trump's impeachment or his endorsement of Sanders' "Medicare for all" plan.

High profile Democratic heavy hitters including former President Barack Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden, and Vermont Sen.

Seahawks grades versus Chargers in unsettling loss
The Chargers' Caleb Sturgis missed two extra points and a field goal in the team's 25-17 win over the Seahawks on Sunday. They also had a moment of silence for Allen and had the "12 Flag" that's raised before every game lowered to half-staff.

DeSantis defeated Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum in a race plagued by an FBI investigation and various allegations of racism. Neither Georgia nor Florida has elected a Democratic governor in 20 years.

But Griffin insisted on social media that Gillum actually didn't mean to concede, and that he would win in a recount and a runoff election.

He also must appoint a host of state agency heads overseeing areas such as education, health care, transportation and prisons. Democrats now have complete control of state government in Colorado, New York, Illinois, Maine and New Mexico.

Florida Democrats' strategy in midterm elections has been to nominate a moderate, white candidate from the central part of the state while targeting their turnout effort to the party's South Florida stronghold and along the Interstate 4 corridor that runs from Daytona Beach in the east to Tampa Bay in the west.

Winning state-level power would help Republicans and Democrats support or resist Trump's agenda on issues such as healthcare, gun control and gay rights.
