Big Ten championship has huge implications for Ohio State

MI head coach Jim Harbaugh instructs his team against Ohio State during an NCAA college football game Saturday, Nov. 24, 2018, in Columbus, Ohio. "It's what we wanted, though, for it to be us versus Ohio State in a game to go to the Big Ten championship and keep our playoff hopes alive".

"Most years, teams are going to have to win the conference to get into the playoff".

This season for Ohio State has been anything but normal, beginning with its celebrated coach suspended for three games. With that being said, the only way either team would pull off an upset would be through a shootout. "And certain parts are not". Ohio State's lone loss was by 29 points at Purdue.

The Knights (11-0, 8-0 AAC) continued to pursue a playoff spot after securing a 38-10 win over rival USF Friday during the regular-season finale, extending the nation's longest win streak to 24 games.

Then came a complete thumping of the Wolverines that suddenly brought all of the Buckeyes' goals back into focus. MI was ranked No. 4 in the AP Top 25 and holding onto one of the top spots in the College Football Playoff. But nothing is promised to Oklahoma for Sunday's final ranking, even if both win on Saturday.

This one went down hard. Beating the Wolverines and playing for a conference championship would be a notable achievement this season in which Ohio State suspended coach Urban Meyer for three games for mishandling repeated professional and behavioral problems of an assistant coach. This is a pretty big deal. 1, 2 and 3. But the Wildcats swept every other Big Ten West team and clinched a berth in the title game with two games left.

It wasn't enough to move ahead of a team that lost by 23 points in a game it was favored to win. This was a sophomore who really hadn't played much football at all.

"I was pretty calm going into that situation", Haskins said as he prepared to face MI for the first time as a starter today. Harbaugh took ownership of a complete collapse by MI, but his players were not letting the coach take all the blame.

"I think we definitely showed the country the Ohio State Buckeyes are still here", offensive tackle Isaiah Prince said.

The College Football Playoff National Championship Game is slated to be played on Monday, Jan. 7, at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
