What's Going To Happen At Apple's iPad And MacBook Event Next Week?

Rather than hosting the press in California as it usually does, Apple is coming right to PCMag's backyard here in New York City. Between the location of the event and the subtle hints that Apple is known for leaving in its invites, it's safe to say this event is going to be focused on creating.

Apple's launch event for the 2018 iPad Pro refresh is just two days away. A Retina display is what Apple uses in almost all of its products, save for the MacBook Air. Apple tipster and former KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously claimed that Apple will be refreshing the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and the 10.5-inch model as well.

Apple is also planning to launch a new laptop destined to replace the ageing MacBook Air, and a new Mac Mini geared toward professional users, according to people familiar with the plans. The first render leak for the upcoming tablets indicated a new position for their smart connector and displayed sharper corners than the ones present on all current variants of the iPad.

Rumours are rife that Apple will bring USB-C charging to the Pro range which could be a good decision.

Operating income is expected to be between $2.1 billion and $3.6 billion, compared with $2.1 billion in fourth quarter 2017. Global net sales came to $15.55 billion, up 13 percent, with an operating loss of $494 385 million.

The USB-C port would allow for faster charging and output of up to 4K when the iPad is connected to another monitor.

And what about the iPad Mini?

The iPad Pro will also be thinner than the older generations at 5.86mm. This will be the first update to Mac Mini since 2014.

Signs of new Macs came from a filing sighted by Consomac in the Eurasion Economic Union. As usual, there'll be a live stream available on the Apple website. In some ways it's freaky that Apple hasn't thought to upgrade it in so long, but there's not much that needs changing in the way of the design - it's the internals that are going to get a bump if an upgrade is coming.

Apple's event will take place at an opera house in Brooklyn, and invitations were accompanied by creative renditions of the Apple logo, suggesting that the new products will be tied to the theme of art and content creation, whether that means app development or illustration. Wireless charging pads aren't uncommon at this point, and alongside an update to AirPods that could possibly include a new wireless chip that enables "Hey Siri" functionality (instead of having to physically double-tap your earbuds to activate it), we might finally be able to just plop our headphones down on a mat to top them off.
