Vancouver vigil to honour the victims of deadly synagogue shooting

When the shooter entered the Tree of Life synagogue on Saturday, the rabbi there would have been reading the same scripture that Moskovitz read to his Vancouver congregation, he said.

A group of Pittsburgh Jewish leaders wrote an open letter to President Donald Trump on Sunday telling him he bears responsibility for a deadly shooting at a synagogue in the United States city.

He was also charged with several counts of obstructing the free exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death - a federal hate crime - and using a firearm to commit murder.

"When Jews are murdered in Pittsburgh, the people of Israel feel the pain", he wrote.

In Squirrel Hill, the close-knit neighbourhood and heart of Pittsburgh's Jewish community where the shooting occurred, a hush descended.

Authorities said they found victims at three locations inside the synagogue, located in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill neighborhood.

It followed a spate of pipe bombs found mailed in recent days to prominent political figures, mostly Democrats including former U.S. President Barack Obama, ahead of November 6 congressional elections.

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto called it the darkest day in the history of Pittsburgh.

The Allegheny County medical examiner identified the victims at the Tree of Life synagogue as Joyce Fienberg, 75; Richard Gottfried, 65; Rose Mallinger, 97; Jerry Rabinowitz, 66; Cecil Rosenthal, 59, and his brother, David Rosenthal, 54; Bernice Simon, 84, and her husband, Sylvan Simon, 86; Daniel Stein, 71; Melvin Wax, 88; and Irving Younger, 69.

The Saturday morning rituals were still under way at a synagogue in quiet Squirrel Hill when the shots rang out.

The Jerusalem Post quoted Dov Khenin, a member of the Joint List Arab faction in the Knesset, as saying that he suspects "the attack is an expression of the growth of unsafe antisemitism in American society - a part of the racist and violent wave during the presidency of [Donald] Trump".

He has been hospitalised with multiple gunshot wounds but will appear before a federal magistrate on Monday.

Brady is seeking authorization from Sessions to pursue the death penalty, AP reported.

During the week of October 22, there were several acts of terrorism within the United States.

Originally from India, Silvana Shaqueeb said as a Muslim woman, she wanted to stand in solidarity with Jewish people.

"I know a few of the people who are always there that early, and he is one of them", she said.

Some attendees blamed the shooting on the nation's political climate, and said they took little solace in the planned visit by Trump. I have to really think about that.

On Saturday, Trump called the shooting an act of pure evil and called on Americans to rise above hatred.

KDKA television in Pittsburgh cited police sources as saying Bowers walked into the building and yelled "All Jews must die". The Jewish community is the backbone.
