US Navy Planning Global Force Showdown to Warn China

Photos of an encounter between a Navy guided-missile destroyer and Chinese warship shed light on just how close the ships came to colliding Sunday in the South China Sea.

Friendly relations between the two countries have nosedived since Donald Trump became president in 2017.

Gorman said on Tuesday the Chinese destroyer approached within 41 metres of the Decatur's bow.

It "may reflect in part the growing U.S".

The Chinese destroyer was trying to run off the American ship from what China considers its own territory.

It added that the USA was "taking one provocative operation after another ... under the pretext of "navigation and overflight freedom".

"When two big nations are confronting each other, it is necessary to maintain a proper military balance to avoid the conflict from getting out of control", he said.

China opposes the entry of USA warships into the waters around the reefs, the Chinese defense ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

Beijing confirmed that the Luoyang, a Chinese missile destroyer, was immediately deployed to identify the United States warship and drive it away.

That all came around the time U.S. B-52 bombers took part in a combined operation with Japan over the East China Sea, and flew through worldwide airspace over the South China Sea.

This was stated by the spokesperson for the Chinese Defence Ministry Senior Colonel Ren Guoqiang at a regular news briefing.

A USA defense official characterized the close encounter as having been of short duration.

It said one of its ships nearly collided with a Chinese warship in the South China Sea, in an "unsafe and unprofessional manoeuvre".

It was unclear whether Sunday's maneuver came at Beijing's request - or was initiated by the Chinese ship's captain -- but political motivations were likely a factor in forcing a close call.

"There's tension points in the relationship, but based on discussions coming out of NY last week and other things that we have coming up, we do not see it getting worse", Mattis told reporters en route to Paris. "There is a real risk of miscalculation", Heath said.

Since Trump took office a year ago, his administration has escalated pressure on China, most recently with several rounds of tit-for-tat economic trade tariffs on hundreds of billions in goods.

The US and China have clashed over a wide range of issues, including trade,Taiwan, sanctions, and increased American military activity in the disputed South China Sea, which China and other Asian nations hold certain claims to.

"It is a serious threat to the sovereignty and security of China, will damage seriously the relations between China, the United States and their armed forces, and gravely undermines peace and regional stability", said chinese authorities.

He said that China now spends as much on its military as the rest of Asia combined, and is prioritizing capabilities to erode USA military advantages "on land, at sea, in the air, and in space".

During this incident, which had provoked a diplomatic crisis major, the pilot chinese had been killed and the spy plane from the usa had made an emergency landing on the chinese island of Hainan.
