Thousands of people are likely to be without power on Florida's Panhandle for at least another week, as power restoration continues.

The president said someone described Hurricane Michael to him as being "like a very wide, extremely wide, tornado". People there were signing up for temporary housing and picking up clothing, diapers, water and other supplies.

"We listened to voicemails we received overnight", he said, "and you can just hear in their voice their desperation, wanting to know if their family member is alive and well or if their family member has passed". Said Trump: "This is really incredible". "And I want to thank the first lady", he said.

However, Governor Scott has warned local authorities that they may find their homes have been destroyed and so will need emergency accommodation locally.

Scott returned the praise, saying that Trump has always followed through on federal promises of support.

The Florida Panhandle took a direct hit from Michael. Power crews were working to restore power.

Trump was given an aerial view of the devastated areas from Marine One, the presidential helicopter, as rescue efforts on the ground remained marred by blocked roads.

On the Panhandle, Tyndall Air Force Base "took a beating", so much so that Col. Brian Laidlaw told the 3,600 men and women stationed on the base not to come back. Hurricane Michael slammed into the Florida Panhandle last week as the strongest storm to strike the continental United States in almost 50 years. Although Florida absorbed the brunt of the storm, southwestern Georgia also suffered under Michael's winds, which caused property damage and power outages.

Hurricane Michael's death toll climbed to 18 Saturday, after another victim was discovered in Virginia.
