N's CEC terms Shehbaz's arrest a revenge tactic

According to sources, PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif's arrest and the strategy for the by-polls scheduled for October 14 will be discussed during the meeting.

The decision was taken during a Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting of the former ruling party at the Model Town residence of Sharif family.

However, the PML-N leaders now claim that due to the "sudden arrest" of his younger brother and former Punjab chief minister Shahbaz Sharif, the elder Sharif has been forced to jump into the political arena in order to boost the morale of the party workers.

A rare meeting last month between Prime Minister Imran Khan and NAB Chairman Javed Iqbal also raised eyebrows as the first-time premier is also facing an NAB probe over allegedly illegal use of government helicopters.

During the meeting, party's leadership termed the actions of the anti-graft watchdog a revenge tactic.

On July 6, the accountability court had announced the verdict in the Avenfield reference, sentencing Mr Sharif to 10 years in prison for owning assets beyond known source income and to one year for not cooperating with NAB.

Shahbaz was apprehended during his appearance before NAB in Saaf Pani Company scam. The PML-N Parliamentary Party said Shahbaz's arrest was made without seeking permission from the NA speaker.

Addressing the protesters, the PML-N leaders said the opposition was being victimised on behest of Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Accusing previous governments of looting wealth of the nation he said the PML-N and PPP were a "union of corruption" and when they faced accountability, they start terming it a threat to democracy.

The bureau is also investigating Shehbaz Sharif in the clean water project scam, Paragon Housing Society scandal and Punjab Power Company corruption cases.

However, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said there was "solid evidence" against Sharif.

"The fashion in which Shehbaz has been arrested is tantamount to humiliating the entire parliament", said Khursheed Shah, a PPP parliamentarian and former opposition leader.

"The government is taking such steps to rig the forthcoming by-elections", Rana Sanaullah, a senior parliamentarian and PML (N) leader, told reporters. "PTI is responsible for this political victimisation and should be ready to reap what it is sowing today", he said.

"Joint opposition will be protesting against Shehbaz's arrest soon", he added.
