Hurricane Oscar gains strength but still not threat to land National News

Oscar, the 15th named storm this season, was located about 620 miles southeast of Bermuda and 620 miles northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands, the National Hurricane Center said in its 5 a.m. advisory Monday.

Oscar is the 15th named storm of the six-month Atlantic hurricane season that ends November 30.

Additional strengthening is expected, and Oscar could become a hurricane after transitioning to a tropical storm later this weekend or early next week. "Near or just beyond 96 hours, the shear is forecast to increase substantially and Oscar should begin to make the transition to an extratropical cyclone".

Tropical Storm Oscar continues to swirl over the Atlantic Ocean, but it does not pose any threat to land. The potential Oscar is then expected to turn westward "well to the north or northeast of the Lesser Antilles through early next week", the center said.

The Bermuda Weather Service said the storm was moving west at about 19.5 mph with winds of more than 64 mph and gusts of 79 mph.

The Atlantic hurricane season typically peaks in September and October, but major storms do sometimes form in November.
